Tutorial: Avoid Accidental Capitalising

Beginners, and many experienced users of the keyboard, often get frustrated when ‘hunting and pecking’ at the keyboard when composing a letter they find that they have suddenly TYPED A LOAD OF LETTERS IN CAPITALS.

This is because you have accidentally hit the Caps Lock key instead of the Shift key. Bothe WindowsXP and Vista have ways of warning you about this situation. They both have a hidden feature called Toggle Keys. This tool creates a bleep whenever you press the Caps Lock or Num Lock keys to warn you of the keystroke.

To turn on Toggle Keys follow these steps –

  1. In either WindowsXP or Vista go to the Control Panel from the Start menu.
  2. With Vista click the Ease of Access function and then choose Change How Your Keyboard Works.
  3. In WindowsXP use the Accessibilty Options and in the following window, click Accessibilty Options again.
  4. With Vista tick the box marked Turn on Toggle Keys and click Save.
  5. With other Windows versions simply click on the box marked Use Toggle Keys.
  6.

With this option turned on you will now get ‘bleeped’ every time you press the Lock keys. If you get irritated by this simply reverse the process.
